The MCHS program, sponsored by California Department of Education (CDE), recognizes outstanding continuation high schools that provide comprehensive services to at-risk youth, using the best instructional strategies, flexible scheduling and guidance/counseling services.
“The stigma of ‘continuation education’ disappears within seconds of meeting staff, students and stakeholders in this community,” states the summary from the MCHS site validation visiting team. They described the environment of the school to be welcoming, and noted that just beyond the entrance gates lies the true heart of the school. “The teachers, counselor and support staff at MVHS mirror the positive qualities and characteristics of their principal,” notes the summary.
“At Mountain View, every team member is focused on our students’ success, empowering our students to meet their goals and graduating!” says Principal Ken Swanson. “We don’t have a ‘one-size-fits-all’ program,” he explains. “We have flexible, intentional and rigorous structures to ensure our students build up their momentum and become college and career ready. We are a supportive family where each member feels valued,” notes Principal Swanson.
San Jacinto Unified’s Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services Sherry Smith is extremely pleased with CDE’s selection of 2018 Model Continuation High Schools. “There is no school I can think of more deserving of this prestigious award than Mountain View High,” shares Mrs. Smith. “The short-term and long-term positive impact this school and staff have on students’ lives is magical to witness!”
In CDE’s news release of the 2018 model designations, more than 53,000 students attended California’s 441 continuation high schools in the 2016-17 school year. MVHS graduated 92 students in 2017 and expects to surpass that number in 2018. MVHS graduates contributed to the 92.3% graduation rate for San Jacinto Unified, which is in the top 10 highest graduation rates in Riverside County.
Formal recognition for being designated as a 2018 model continuation school will be held at the California Continuation Education Association State Conference in San Diego on April 27, 2018. For more information, please visit the CDE Continuation Education Web page or the CCEA Website.
